Yoshida, Shizuoka

Along the right bank of the Oi River's lower reaches, the flat terrain of Yoshida-cho opens toward Suruga Bay — a landscape shaped as much by industrial logistics as by tidal rhythms. Shirasuggest trucks move along National Route 150 from Yoshida Port, where small-scale processing facilities handle the whitebait landed each morning. Inland, lettuce fields spread across the alluvial plain, and the melon brand known as Daiya-jirushi suggests an agricultural self-confidence that sits alongside the factory campuses of major manufacturers.

Noman-ji, a Rinzai temple of the Myoshinji school, holds within its grounds a cycad of considerable age — a rare specimen counted among Japan's notable examples of the species. Behind the temple, the earthworks of Koyama Castle rise quietly, a fortification built using the techniques of the Koshu school of castle construction associated with Takeda Shingen. The castle site has been shaped into Noman-ji-yama Park, where a replica keep serves as a viewing platform over the whole town: the flat patchwork of rice paddies tracing the old jori land-division system, the industrial rooftops, the bay beyond.

What holds these layers together is not a single identity but a functional plurality — eel aquaculture ponds beside highway interchanges, a shrine at Kataoka rebuilt in the early twentieth century still marking its ancient designation as a shikinaisha. The town continues its work without much ceremony.
