Huis Ten Bosch The Starlight Million

On the western edge of Kyushu, a Dutch city that never was puts on thirteen million lights and becomes, for a winter, a city of no country at all. Huis Ten Bosch's The Starlight Million — renamed in 2026 after years as the Kingdom of Light — is routinely called Japan's grandest illumination, and the numbers oblige — but scale here means distance, not density. You walk, and the light keeps going: down canals where illuminated boats slide past, up the face of a palace, across gardens that pulse and dim like something breathing. The water doubles everything; the canals hold a second, trembling city beneath the first. Sasebo's winter is gentler than Tokyo's, soft enough for long evenings outdoors, and the grounds are vast enough that the crowds thin at the edges into something close to solitude. It is less a theme-park evening than a stay in a foreign capital that exists only after dark. From November to late February, the Starlight Million stands at Japan's far western edge — Europe as a rumor, winter as a festival, and Nagasaki's long tradition of facing outward given its brightest possible form.
