This park was a domain garden before it was a park. Ogi city writes that it was laid out by Motoshige Nabeshima, first lord of the Ogi domain, and carried on by his successor Naoyoshi, and the ground has kept that shape. About 3,000 cherry trees flower here, and the city puts the period at late March into early April, when visitors come from inside and outside the prefecture. Through the blossom period the trees are lit until nine in the evening.

The park's other flowering season is far larger in number.

About 25,000 azalea plants come out in early summer, roughly eight azaleas for every cherry tree on the site. The two seasons are months apart and do not compete, but the arithmetic says something about how the ground was planned: the cherry trees are why the place appears on the national list of a hundred, and the azaleas are why the same paths are worth walking again in a different month.

Saga prefecture has one entry among those hundred sites, and the city writes that this is it. That entry is a garden rather than a riverbank, a castle moat or a stretch of road, which makes it unusual company on the list. Somebody chose where each view would fall, and the cherry trees now stand inside a plan drawn for a lord's household rather than for a crowd. Three thousand trees is a large number to fit into a design of that kind, and the result reads as a garden at close range and as a cherry site from any distance.
