There is a variety here of which the park has exactly six. Tokiwa Park gives its cherry total as about 3,500 and then breaks it down: some 3,100 Somei-yoshino, 300 double-flowered, 50 kanhi-zakura, 30 yama-zakura, 25 kawazu-zakura, 20 weeping, 20 mame-zakura. And six gyoiko.

Six trees out of three and a half thousand, counted separately and published.

Gyoiko is the cherry with greenish flowers, pale and faintly yellow rather than pink or white. It is not a variety most people have ever seen, and you would walk past it without a reason to look.

Publishing that number is a small act of generosity on the part of whoever maintains the park, and it is easy to miss. It is not there to impress anybody; three thousand one hundred is the number that impresses. It is there so that a person who wants to find the green cherry among three thousand pink ones knows that six of them exist, that they are somewhere in the grounds, and that the search has an end. The flowering runs from late March into the middle of April. The range of varieties is what stretches it that far: kawazu-zakura at the early end, the double kinds at the late one. The park lights the trees at night while the peak lasts.
