# Imagami Onsen

The road to Imagami Onsen in Yamagata's Tozawa village ends where pavement does — ten kilometers of unpaved forest track separate it from the nearest station, and the silence that greets you on arrival feels less like absence than like something accumulated over centuries. The spring here was reportedly discovered in 724, and the single inn that stands at the foot of Imagami mountain has never quite shed that founding weight. This is not a resort. It is a place people have come to when they had run out of other places to go.

What lingers in the mind is the custom of entering the water in white robes, reciting nembutsu — the calling of the Buddha's name. The spring earned the name Nembutsu Onsen from this practice, and the waters themselves, a sodium-sulfate-bicarbonate composition, carry a particular mineral weight on the skin. Below the inn, the Nagakura River moves through the forest. Nearby, Imagamino Shrine stands in quiet relation to the water, as it has for a long time, and the pond called Oike reflects whatever light comes through the old-growth trees.

To stay here for several nights would be to find the days growing simpler and slower. There is little to organize, little to plan. The water, the forest, the rhythm of bathing — these become the structure. The history of the place, heavy as it is, does not press down so much as settle, becoming part of the stillness that surrounds everything here.
