# Kuse Onsen

The road into Kuse follows the Hisaka River through a narrow valley in Ibigawa, a part of Gifu Prefecture that most travelers pass over entirely. There are no grand arrival markers here, no banners or souvenir arcades. The river runs beside you, and the mountains close in on either side, and that is the introduction you receive.

The water at Shiryū-no-Yu — the town-run open-air bath that constitutes the heart of this place — is an alkaline simple spring, the kind that leaves the skin feeling quietly altered, softer somehow, without any theatrical sulfur or vivid color to announce itself. The bath is modest in construction, almost deliberately so. It is a municipal facility, built and maintained by the town, and it carries that honest, unfussy character.
