# Mitado Shinbutsu Onsen

The water here was not sought. In 1959, workers drilling for a simple municipal water supply struck something else entirely — a cold mineral spring rising from beneath the Nagara River plain on the outskirts of Gifu city. It took nearly a decade before anyone thought to name it, and the name they chose, Mitado Shinbutsu, came not from legend but from geography: the nearby temple of Hokkeji and the White Mountain shrine standing quietly on the same ground. There is something fitting in that — a spring discovered by accident, named after its neighbors, defined not by drama but by proximity.

The water itself is a simple carbonated iron spring, the kind that leaves a faint mineral trace on the skin rather than overwhelming it. This same source feeds the Nagara River hot springs downstream, but here at Mitado the setting is deliberately modest. The facility was built with the elderly and those with disabilities in mind, and that intention shapes everything — the pace, the atmosphere, the low admission. One does not come here for spectacle. One comes because the water is genuine and the surroundings ask nothing of you.

To spend several nights near Mitado is to settle into the rhythms of a working Gifu neighborhood rather than a resort. The bus from the city runs through ordinary streets. Hokkeji sits close enough to visit on foot. The spring remains what it always has been — something found by chance, tended carefully, offered plainly to the people around it.
