# Oku Dogo Onsen

The Ishite River narrows as it moves upstream from Matsuyama, and it is here, in the folds of a small gorge, that the water finds its way to the surface. Oku Dogo sits at that confluence — not in the busy lanes of Dogo Onsen proper, but a little further in, where the valley closes gently around you. The spring itself is an alkaline sulfur water, a rarity on Shikoku, and it flows in generous volume. You notice the quality almost before you name it: a particular softness against the skin, a faint mineral trace in the air.

Places built around waters like these tend to attract a certain kind of visitor — one who comes less to see than to stay. The resort developed around a single large hotel, Oku Dogo Issen no Mori, and the rhythm of several nights here is shaped accordingly. Morning baths, afternoon quiet, the bath again at dusk. The sulfur water is noted for its effects on joints and skin, and there is something in the very unhurriedness of the place that seems designed for recovery rather than itinerary.

Buses still connect this valley to Matsuyama Airport and the city beyond — the Iyotetsu line, the express to Imabari. The infrastructure is ordinary, practical, easy. And yet once you are here, the gorge and the flowing water absorb the ordinary texture of arrival. What remains is the spring itself, running out of the earth in quiet abundance, doing what it has always done.
