# Shiohara Onsen

At the foot of Kanmuriyama, the second-highest peak in Hiroshima Prefecture, a single inn holds a spring that is said to have been discovered in the Asuka period — a claim that carries no ceremony here, only the quiet weight of accumulated time. The water is known for its radon content, among the highest in Hiroshima, and the place draws those who come not for spectacle but for the particular kind of rest that only a proper therapeutic spring can offer. There is something deliberate about arriving somewhere so singular.

The inn, Matsukawa, is the one establishment, which means the valley holds only what it has always held: the mountain, the water, and the sound of the surrounding forest. Several dozen varieties of baths are said to be available, a generous abundance given the solitude of the setting. To stay for several nights would be to feel the logic of the place slowly assert itself — the body gradually acknowledging the mineral patience of the water, the rhythm of bathing and resting becoming its own form of attention.

Getting here requires intention. A fifty-minute bus ride from the San'yō Main Line, or a short drive from the Yoshiwa interchange, ensures that the journey itself is part of the transition. By the time one arrives at Shiohara, the ordinary world has already receded somewhat. What remains is a mountain valley, a thermal spring with a very long memory, and the rare comfort of having nowhere else to be.
