# Yoi Onsen

The Shimanto River meets the Hiromi River here, at a fold in the mountains of Nishitosa. There is no onsen district to speak of — no lantern-lit arcade, no souvenir shops angled toward the bus-tour crowd. A few hotels, a scattering of small guesthouses, and the river running alongside. The water itself is colorless, odorless, without particular taste — what the Japanese classify simply as *tanjun onsen*, a plain spring. Yet that plainness carries its own quality. There is nothing to perform, nothing to interpret. You lower yourself into the water and the river is just outside.

To reach Yoi, one arrives by the Yodo Line from Ekawasaki, or drives in along mountain roads from the expressway — neither route quick, neither casual. The effort of arriving is part of what the place offers. Once here, the rhythm shifts. The Nishitosa Fureai Hall stands nearby as a reminder that this remains a working community, not a preserved tableau. People gather there for local events; the spring serves those who live around it as much as those passing through.

Several nights here would feel less like a holiday than a slow recalibration. The water asks nothing of you. The confluence of the two rivers marks the days rather than a clock. One walks, perhaps paddles, perhaps simply watches the light change on the water. The simplicity is not a diminishment — it is, rather, the whole point.
