神津島

The lava dome of Tenjōsan rises near the center of the island, its slopes opening into expanses of pale sand the locals call the front and back deserts. Springwater runs clear from the rock here, and on certain nights the sky is dark enough that the island has been recognized as a starlight reserve. Kōzushima sits at the western edge of the Izu archipelago, a gourd-shaped volcanic island in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu range, where obsidian once drew people across open water in the late Paleolithic — evidence, perhaps, of the oldest sea voyages in the region.

Down at Maehama, the beach runs long and gentle, while around at Akasaki the reef shelters small fish in still water. Fishermen still bring up seaweed and shellfish; diving and snorkeling shape much of the working year. The pace is set by weather and ferry schedules rather than by any calendar of attractions.

Each spring the islanders observe the Julia Festival, remembering a Korean Christian woman exiled here in the early Edo period — a quiet annual marker that says something about how memory is held on an island this small. What distinguishes Kōzushima from its neighbors in the Izu chain is this layering: obsidian, springwater, exile, and an unhurried economy of the sea, all contained within a coastline one can come to know by walking.
