A reading of this place

The木口汽船 ferry from Fukue leaves three times a day, and the crossing takes only as long as a slow lunch. What arrives on the other side is an island of mostly mountain, with two small harbors—Ifuki and Hongama—holding the few houses between them. The roads are short. The sea is always nearby.

At the 地のもん工房 増栄丸 in the Ifuki district, the day's catch becomes something that keeps: dried, salted, packaged in small lots. Fishing boats work the waters as they have long worked them, and quarrymen cut stone from the slopes. Tuna pens float somewhere offshore. The population is small enough that one notices each absence, each new face. Cars cross on the ferry only twice a month, on the 12th and the 17th, which is a schedule that organizes a certain kind of patience.

The island carries the older layers without display—縄文 stone tools in the soil, the memory of Heike refugees, the long quiet practice of かくれキリシタン, a measurement made by 伊能忠敬 in passing. None of this is signposted. The texture here is one of subtraction: fewer people, fewer sounds, fewer reasons to hurry. To spend a season is to learn the ferry timetable by heart, and to accept that the weather, not the calendar, decides most things.
