Sukagawa, Fukushima

The station building at Sukagawa references the peony in its design — a quiet acknowledgment that the city's most enduring identity is botanical. Sukagawa Botan-en, a short distance away, holds the only nationally designated scenic site of its kind in Japan, and the peonies have been cultivated here long enough that the place carries a settled, unhurried weight rather than the atmosphere of a managed attraction.

Walking further into the city, the layers accumulate. The Ōshū Kaidō once ran through here as a post town, and Matsuo Bashō paused long enough that Jūnen-ji temple now keeps a stone monument to his visit. The Sukagawa Ichirizuka — a milestone — still marks the old road's measure. At Midorigaoka Park, the municipal museum holds archaeological and historical material from the area, while the surrounding grounds look out toward the Nasu mountain range on clear days.

Then there is the other thread: Tsuburaya Eiji, who built the visual grammar of tokusatsu filmmaking, was born here. The Sukagawa Tokusatsu Archive Center holds a vast collection of miniatures and production materials from that world — not a theme park, but an archive, the distinction mattering. Each November, the Taimatsu Akashi festival lights the city with large torches, a practice rooted in the memory of the castle's fall. Kiwi cucumbers appear at local markets under the name *kiuri*, tying the present harvest to a festival — the Kiuri Tennō-sai — that carries the same name.
