A reading of this place

The scent of yuzu moves through Kitagawa-mura before anything else announces it — sharp, citric, present in the air near the processing sheds and in the gift boxes stacked at roadside stops. The village sits deep in the forested mountains of eastern Kochi, folded along the Nahari River, and the yuzu groves on the hillsides are not decorative but working: the fruit ends up in juices, seasonings, and products that carry the village's name outward. Once a year the harvest season finds its counterpart in the Nakagawa Shintaro to Yuzu Matsuri, a festival that joins the village's agricultural identity to its historical one, because Kitagawa-mura is also the birthplace of Nakagaoka Shintaro, the Bakumatsu-era loyalist whose memory the Nakagaoka Shintaro-kan museum has preserved since the early 1990s.

The other layer of the village's past runs on iron rails — or rather, it did. The Yanase Forest Railway, which once carried timber through these mountains, was decommissioned in the Showa era, and what remains are the designated cultural heritage facilities scattered along its former route: bridges, inclines, the physical grammar of an industrial forest economy now gone quiet. The Yanase Dam, a massive rockfill structure on the Nahari River, marks a different era of infrastructure. Against all this, the Kitagawa Onsen Yuzu no Yado, built using CLT timber construction with locally sourced wood, sits as a more recent statement — the village turning its forest materials toward hospitality rather than extraction.

At Hoshi Shrine, in odd-numbered years on the eighth of January, over a thousand arrows are drawn through the ritual of the Oyumi Matsuri. The ceremony is not a performance staged for visitors; it happens because it has always happened here, in this particular mountain village, on this particular date.
