# Sakai Onsen

The water at Sakai Onsen did not arrive by any ancient legend. It came up through the earth in 1970, discovered almost by accident during a survey for black ore deposits in the mountains of Minami-Aizu. The following year it was named, and a village facility rose around it — modest, practical, the kind of place that serves a community rather than performs for visitors. That original building is gone now, replaced in 2021 by the Aizu Kogen Hoshinosato Hotel, the single inn that stands here today on its plateau above the valley. The lineage is recent, even a little industrial in origin, and that honesty gives the place a particular kind of credibility.

The water itself is sodium-chloride and sulfate in composition, rising from the source at sixty degrees. It is the sort of water that warms slowly and holds the warmth, that asks nothing of you but patience. Staying several nights in a one-inn onsen like this means there is nowhere else to be, no competing recommendation pulling you down the road. The rhythm becomes simple: the bath, the meal, the window, the bath again.

The plateau sits quietly between two identities — a place of recuperative stillness and, in its own season, a resort serving the skiers of Aizu Kogen Nanago nearby. Outside that season, the silence returns fully. From Aizu-Tajima station, a shuttle bus takes roughly forty minutes into the hills. That gap in transit is not inconvenience so much as threshold, the gradual leaving behind of ordinary time.
