A reading of this place

The ferry from Takeshiba Pier arrives at Motomachi Port after hours on the water, and the first thing you notice stepping off is the air — warm for Tokyo, and carrying something faintly green, faintly volcanic. Izu Oshima sits far enough from the mainland that it operates on its own logic, its own timetable. Mihara-yama, the active volcano at the island's center, shapes nearly everything: the terrain, the soil, the hot springs that appeared in the aftermath of its 1986 eruption.

Camellia — *tsubaki* — is not a decoration here but an industry and a calendar. The Tsubaki Matsuri organizes the late-winter months, and the tunnel paths of wild camellia at Izutsu and Sashikiji, where large old trees arch over the road and close out the sky, are walked by islanders as much as visitors. At Oshima Koen in the Sentsui district, a camellia garden of considerable scale sits alongside a small zoo and a camellia archive. The island's craft shops carry *gyunyu senbei* — milk crackers — and Oshima butter, both products of the island's livestock farming, quiet reminders that this place feeds itself.

Habu Port, formed from a volcanic crater that collapsed into a circular inlet in the ninth century, still holds the proportions of a working harbor, with Taisho-era buildings along its edge. The layered cliff face along Route 208 near Nozu — exposed volcanic strata running the length of a hillside — reads like a geological ledger of every eruption the island has absorbed. Oshima Onsen, sourced from that same volcanic activity, offers a sodium-calcium chloride spring that did not exist before the mountain last moved.
