# Mioka Onsen

The Shimada River moves quietly through the middle of Yamaguchi Prefecture, and along its middle reaches, on a sandbar surrounded by rice paddies, the springs of Mioka emerged. The story goes that the sources were exposed by a typhoon in the postwar years — Kitty, as it was — and that the place was developed not long after, in the early Showa decades. Before the waters came, this was logging country, a place where timber floated downstream and men gathered to work. That history has receded almost entirely, leaving behind a stillness that feels earned rather than arranged.

The waters here are sulphurous and slightly radioactive — the kind of designation that sounds alarming until you understand its long tradition in Japanese balneology as a mark of specific mineral depth. The source temperature is mild, at 34 degrees, which means the baths are drawn with care rather than simply tapped raw. Three inns and a municipal bathhouse, the Tozanji Yasuragi no Sato, serve the few who find their way here. That smallness is the point. Mioka has been designated a national health resort spa, a quiet bureaucratic recognition that the waters do something particular to those who stay.

To spend several nights at a place like this — at Misuien, say, or Tsuruya — is to enter a rhythm that has little to do with sightseeing. The cranes of local legend are gone, but their name lingers in the inn and in the mood. The paddies absorb sound. The river continues its indifferent passage. One bathes, rests, and bathes again, and the days arrange themselves accordingly.
