A reading of this place

The single-car train of the Hojo Railway rattles through rice paddies and past wooden station buildings that look barely altered since the Taisho era. This is Kasai, set in the middle of the Harima Plain in southern Hyogo, an inland basin ringed by low hills and threaded with irrigation ponds that have shaped the agriculture here for centuries. The paddy fields produce Yamada Nishiki, the sake rice prized across Japan, alongside Kinuhikari under the local name Nehime no Kagayaki, and a purple-black rice called Murasaki no Mai that stains the water in the pot before it even begins to cook.

The temple of Ichijoji sits on a hillside north of the plain, its three-storied pagoda — a National Treasure — rising above cryptomeria in a stillness that feels earned rather than performed. Nearby, Rakanji holds hundreds of stone rakan figures arranged across the slope, each face slightly different, worn smooth in places by weather and time. The North Conditions neighborhood, once a post-town on a historic route, still holds the rhythm of that older arrangement: the Sumiyoshi Shrine anchors one end, and in April the Hojo Sekku Festival moves through the streets with a formality that belongs to the town rather than to any tourist calendar.

The agricultural character of Kasai is not background scenery — it is the working substance of the place. Garlic sold under the name Harima-o, sweet green peppers called Nehime Midori, and a local wine labeled Nehime no Mai all come from the same flat, productive land visible from the train window. The Hyogo Prefectural Flower Center spreads across a wide tract of that land, less a formal garden than a place where horticulture is taken seriously enough to stock the shelves of the nearby Kasai City Library with gardening books.
