Asahi, Nagano

Lettuces grow in rows across the flat land at the base of the mountains, part of what locals call the Salad Highway — a corridor of highland vegetable farming that gives Asahi Village its working character. The village sits on the alluvial fan of the Kusari River at considerable elevation, with forested slopes pressing in on nearly every side. Surnames here — Uejo, Mikura, Kiyosawa — cluster in ways that trace back to Sengoku-era land clearance, and the sense that families have worked the same ground for generations is not imagined.

Hatamori-yama rises behind the village as a presence rather than a backdrop. It carries a history of rain-prayer rituals, and villagers still speak of it as their symbol. The Asahi Museum of Art holds sculpture by Uejo Shunsuke alongside a folklore and historical archive — a pairing that feels right for a place where the past is neither curated nor forgotten. Nearby, the single Family Mart, which opened in 2018, marks the outer edge of what convenience means here.

The お夏まつり festival punctuates the agricultural calendar, and the IHI Shibaura and Kanro factories add an industrial note that keeps the village from being purely pastoral. Twenty minutes by car from Shiojiri Station, Asahi is close enough to reach without difficulty, yet the road in through the trees makes the distance feel earned.
