Toyone, Aichi

The road through Toyone narrows as the valley closes in, cedar slopes pressing down on both sides until the village feels less like a destination than a discovery made by accident. More than nine-tenths of this Aichi municipality is mountain, and the remaining fraction — a scatter of hamlets, a roadside station, a bathhouse — sits in the folds of the Tenryū river system as if tucked there deliberately. The 熊谷家住宅, a merchant's compound from the mid-Edo period, still carries the proportions of a sake brewery that once anchored the local economy, its heavy beams and earthen walls standing as evidence of a trade that has long since quieted.

In winter, the 花祭 — a form of 霜月神楽 — runs through the night in village halls, a ritual old enough that its origins blur into legend. The rest of the year moves at the pace of forestry and small-scale agriculture: local vegetables, mountain herbs, and tea grown on slopes that see little flat ground. At 道の駅豊根グリーンポート宮嶋, the first roadside station established in Aichi, the produce on the shelves reflects what the land actually yields — おひら and foraged greens rather than anything imported for show.

Chausuyama rises to the highest point in the prefecture, and the 佐久間湖 below it fills a valley reshaped by dam construction in the mid-twentieth century — engineering and wilderness now thoroughly intertwined. The 湯〜らんどパルとよね draws on the Usagishima hot spring, a sodium bicarbonate source that surfaces quietly amid the ridgelines. Toyone does not announce itself. It simply continues, sparsely populated, its traditions and its infrastructure occupying the same narrow strips of habitable land.
