# Inuyama Onsen

The water here was not discovered until 1995, drawn up from twelve hundred meters below ground. That relative youth gives Inuyama Onsen a particular quality: there is no accumulated mythology around it, no folklore of miraculous cures or wandering poets who once soaked here. The spring is alkaline and simple, rising cold from the earth and warmed before it reaches the bath. What it offers is not drama but a kind of quiet adequacy — water that softens the skin and eases the body after a day spent walking the town.

And Inuyama itself provides the depth the waters alone cannot. The castle stands above the Kiso River on a bluff, a national treasure that predates the spring by several centuries. The town below it moves at its own pace. There is no onsen district to speak of, no strip of souvenir shops lit up at dusk — only a handful of inns distributed across the area, each keeping its own counsel. Staying at a place like Meitetsukan or the more recently opened Hotel Indigo, which opened in 2022 on the grounds of the former Meitetsu Inuyama Hotel, one becomes less a visitor passing through than a temporary resident of a castle town.

Several nights here would settle into a gentle rhythm. A morning bath, a walk along the river, an evening return. The spring does not announce itself. It simply waits, warm and unassuming, for whoever chooses to stay long enough to notice.
